BOHR AAGE

Danish nuclear physicist (1922-2009)

   The Danish physicist and Nobel laureate Aage Niels Bohr passed on 8 September at 87 years old.

The child of quantum-material science pioneer Niels Bohr, Aage himself made basic commitments to the structure of the iota that, emulating his dad's example, acquired him a portion of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1975.

   The fourth child of Niels and Margrethe Bohr, Aage Niels Bohr was brought into the world in Copenhagen on 19 June 1922, only months before his dad was granted that year's Nobel Prize for Physics for his work on nuclear structure.

   He started his material science certificate at the University of Copenhagen in 1940, soon after the German control of Denmark. Notwithstanding, in 1943, because of the Bohrs' Jewish legacy, Niels Bohr and his family fled Denmark to stay away from capture by the Nazis. After a spell in neighbouring Sweden, the Bohr family proceeded to England to join the public authority worked Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, situated in London.

   In 1944, Niels and Aage headed out to the US, where the two of them chipped away at the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. After the war finished, in 1945, the Bohrs got back to Denmark where Aage finished his graduate degree in 1946.

He at that point went to the US to work at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University in 1948 and afterwards worked with Isidor Isaac Rabi at Columbia University from 1949 to 1950.

   Bohr returned to the University of Copenhagen in 1956, wherein 1963 he succeeded his dad as the top of the Institute of Theoretical Physics.

In 1975, Aage Bohr, along with Ben Roy Mottelson of the Nordic Institute of Theoretical Physics (NORDITA) in Copenhagen and Leo James Rainwater of Columbia University, shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for their work on the inward structure of the nuclear core.

They consolidated the fluid drop model of the core — the image of the core as an incompressible liquid — and the shell model to create an “aggregate model” of the core. Utilizing this model, they indicated how singular nucleon circles can exist in a core with non-circular, fluid drop properties. Regardless of the obvious straightforwardness of the model, the perplexing powers between nucleons are as yet not completely saw today.

   In 1975, after he was granted the Nobel Prize, Bohr became head of NORDITA until 1981.

A sharp musician who delighted in old-style music, Aage Bohr wedded Marietta Soffer in 1950 with whom he had two children and a girl. After she kicked the bucket in 1978, he wedded again in 1981 to Bente Meyer Scharff, who endures him. A burial service will occur on Monday.
